Lasing without inversion in the 'double-lambda' scheme is studied for
arbitrary single-mode cavity linewidth. Former simplified analytic the
ory is tested against full numerical solution of the semiclassical las
er equations. An improved analytic approach is proposed which takes in
to account the leading nonresonant terms. It is shown that the simple
interpretation of lasing in the dressed states picture works well only
in the vicinity of the laser threshold or for such a strong driving t
hat a large separation between the dressed states of the system assure
s little competition of different polarizations induced in the medium.
