A study was made of the effect of transcutaneous diaphragmatic electro
stimulation (DES) on the external respiratory function (ERF) and centr
al hemodynamics (CH) in 36 asthmatic patients. The ERF and CH were exa
mined by microprocessor spiroanalyzers and rheography. DES (2 mA, 0.3
ms, 20-30 v, frequency 13-17 imp/min) was performed for 7 days, 20 min
utes daily. The improvement in respiratory function parameters and a p
ositive clinical effect were achieved in the majority of patients, esp
ecially in asthmatic patients with respiratory insufficiency. The para
meters of CH did not noticeably changed.
