The complete hyperfine spectrum in the optical transition 5d(2)6s2 P-3
(2) --> 5d6s(2)6p P-1(1) of Hf-178m2 was recorded by collinear laser s
pectroscopy using nanogram amounts of samples. The quadrupole moment a
nd isomer shift were determined for the first time as well as a precis
e value and the sign of the magnetic dipole moment. The change in nucl
ear mean-square charge radius between the isomeric state Hf-178(m2) an
d the ground state Hf-178g was evaluated as delta[r2]178,178m2 = -0.05
9(9) fm2. From the hyperfine A and B factors the magnetic moment mu(I)
178m2 = +8.16(4) nuclear magnetons and the spectroscopic quadrupole mo
ment Q(s)178m2 = +6.00(7) b were extracted.
