GIANT-RESONANCE EFFECTS ON HEAVY-ION FUSION

The effect of the coupling to a resonant state in one of the partners of a heavy-ion fusion reaction on the fusion cross section is discusse d. We conclude that the width of the resonance could either enhance or hinder the fusion, depending on the relative importance of the spread ing to escape widths. General comments on the fusion of neutron-rich n uclei are made.
