Abstract
Results from magnetically induced birefringence measurements on pentyl cyanobiphenyl in Vycor-like porous glass are reported. We find that th e Cotton-Mouton coefficient exhibits sigmoidal behavior with temperatu re, consistent with changes in the direction and possibly the magnitud e of a nonzero tensor order parameter, even above the bulk nematic-iso tropic phase transition temperature.
