Abstract
Photolysis of thioxanthenols 3-7 in neutral aqueous solution results i n heterolytic cleavage of the C-OH bond to generate singlet excited st ate thioxanthenium cations, which are readily observed by their charac teristic fluorescence emission. Quantum efficiencies of adiabatic phot odehydroxylation were estimated by measuring the quantum yields of flu orescence from these cations (in the range 0.0015-0.038). The reactivi ty of nucleophiles towards these cations in S1 was investigated by flu orescence quenching and product studies.
