Development of hot springs in the Canadian Rockies was closely linked
to their reputed medicinal value. In 1885, the federal government crea
ted a small reserve around the springs at Sulphur Mountain, an area la
ter enlarged to become Banff National Park, in recognition of the ''gr
eat sanitary and curative advantage to the public.''
