Abstract
Lasers are used in mass spectrometry for two different tasks: (i) samp le volatilization by laser desorption. Lasers can serve for the produc tion of intact gas phase species from nonvolatile, polar, high molecul ar weight, and thermally labile substances. (ii) sample ionization. La sers often act as efficient soft ionization sources.
