Information, as some scientists hold, is a fundamental concept, as muc
h the basis of the universe as matter or energy. Concepts such as data
, information and knowledge are examined. The process of the introduct
ion and broad expansion of geographical information systems in the age
of the general revolution in information is also described. More comp
lex intellectual systems are also described in popular form, including
expert systems which are being more and more extensively introduced i
nto geography. Methods of spatial modelling are of considerable import
ance (from an ecological point of view also) as a basis for the stable
development of the countries of the world. Also of importance in geog
raphical information systems are means of visualizing spatially organi
zed data, including the employment of both traditional and non-traditi
onal data (three-dimensional computer graphics, holographic images, me
ntal maps and projections). A number of topics in geography are descri
bed in which multimedia can be applied. These include research in poli
tical geography, finance, the geography of tourism, of medicine and ot
her topics.
