In the presence of 2-mercaptobenzoxazole (MBO) the diffusion controlle
d cobalt wave splits into two kinetically controlled waves due to the
formation of a Co-MBO complex in chemical equilibrium with the Co-ammi
nic complexes. Owing to the absence of the catalytic processes was pos
sible to determine the composition of the complex from the polarograph
ic data only. The complex contains as ligands two MBO, one NH3 and one
H2O molecules : [Co(II)(C7H4NOS)2(NH3)(H2O)]-degrees. The following c
hemical reaction : [Co(C7H4NOS)2(NH3)(H2O)] + NH3 + 3H2O reversible [C
o(NH3)2(H2O)4]2+ + + 2[C7H4NOS-] is superimposed on the electrochemica
l one causing the kinetic nature of the limiting currents. One has bee
n concluded that a similar complex and reaction are produced in the Co
-mercaptobenzotbiazole system, where the catalytic Co-prewaves and hyd
rogen waves are produced in addition.
