This article focuses on the extent to which violence and conflict in S
outh Africa has spurred community disintegration on the one hand and a
ccelerated the need for social reconstruction and development on the o
ther. The context in which a development and reconstruction programme
will be implemented is examined. The nature, of the violence and confl
ict sweeping the country and its impact on both communities and commun
ity workers is discussed. The challenges facing community workers and
the development field are highlighted within the changing social and p
olitical context.
