IMAGE-ANALYSIS AND MATHEMATICAL MORPHOLOG Y - AN INTRODUCTION

This introduction recalls the history, goals and basic principles of i mage analysis and mathematic morphology, leading to the measurement of morphological and stereological parameters, insisting more particular ly on several important problems such as the ones connected to the mea surement mask or sampling. This is illustrated by a certain number of examples of studies coming from various disciplines.
