The flow birefringence properties of the solutions of poly(1,4-naphtho
ylene-1,3,4-oxadiazole) and poly(3,3'-naphthoylene-1,3,4-oxadiazole) i
n sulfuric acid were investigated. The value of the optical shear coef
ficient of both polymers is approximately two times that known for pol
y(n-phenylene-1,3,4-oxadiazole) in the same solvent. A comparative ana
lysis of the hydrodynamic and dynamooptical characteristics of the sam
ples and the data for other polymers with similar structures showed th
at the poly(naphthoylene) derivatives studied belong to the class of r
igid-chain polymers. A contribution of the naphthalene fragments of th
e backbone to the optical anisotropy of the macromolecular chain segme
nt was determined.
