A. Martin et al., AN UNUSUAL EPITHELIAL PLEOMORPHIC GIANT-CELL TUMOR OF THE PANCREAS WITH OSTEOCLAST-TYPE CELLS, Journal of Clinical Pathology, 47(4), 1994, pp. 372-374
A case of giant cell tumour of the pancreas with a mixture of pleomorp
hic giant cells and osteoclast-like cells is described. This associati
on is rare and its histogenesis has been debated. The presence of a sm
all differentiated adenocarcinomatous area at the periphery of the tum
our indicates an epithelial origin. Moreover, some pleomorphic cells w
ere positive for keratin (KL1). The osteoclast-like cells strongly exp
ressed CD68 (a marker of histiomonocytic lineage) and did not show pro
liferative activity. They probably correspond to an unusual reaction o
f the stroma. Their clinical importance in this type of tumour remains
unknown.
