The distinctive features of the form of the amplitude distribution of
acoustic emission (AE) pulses and the results of determination over a
broad dynamic range are considered. For the power-law model of the amp
litude distribution and the Poisson model of the flux of AE acts we as
sess the reliability and obtain the conditions for a maximum of spurio
us amplitude noise to appear. The block diagram is given for a device
to measure the degree of AE pulse overlap and enhance the reliability
of the results obtained by the AE method of inspection and diagnostics
