Bothrops jonathani is a new species described from the Bolivian altipl
ano and adjacent xeric mountain sides, an area previously unknown to b
e inhabited by any species of pitviper. The new taxon is distantly all
opatric from its most phenotypically similar congener B. alternatus. T
he new species is distinguished from other Bothrops by higher scale co
unts, relatively short hemipenial spines, a unique color pattern, and
distinct prelacunal and second supralabial.
