Abstract
Polarization-dependent surface-extended X-ray-absorption fine-structur e studies on the Ni(110)-c(2x2)-H2O system show that water absorbs via the 0 atom in atop sites with a nearest-neigbour O-Ni bond length of 2.06 +/- 0.03 angstrom. Corresponding near-edge absorption data sugges t that the H-O-H plane is inclined to the surface normal.
