The behaviour of four open-chain analogues of crown ethers (polypodand
s) have been studied under both electron ionization and fast-atom bomb
ardment conditions with the aid of mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy sp
ectroscopy and accurate mass measurements. In electron ionization, ext
ensive fragmentations, closely related to the original structures, are
observed, while fast-atom bombardment, leading to the formation of ab
undant protonated molecules, allows easy establishment of the molecula
r weight. The presence of odd-electron cations in distonic form and th
e occurrence of cyclization reactions are discussed.
