I present a theoretical analysis and study of a compound Fabry-Perot r
esonator consisting of two coupled Fabry-Perot etalons. The coupled re
sonator configuration studied contains a passive and nonabsorptive Fab
ry-Perot cavity coupled to an active Fabry-Perot cavity, the absorptio
n of which can be adjusted. Mathematical relationships useful in the d
esign and optimization of the structures with prescribed properties fo
r device applications are given
