Propagation of an electromagnetic wave in a layered locally isotropic
medium is considered. An effective birefringence n(parallel-to) - n(pe
rpendicular-to) approximately (lambda/a)2 for the parallel-to and perp
endicular-to eigenpolarizations appears, and the corresponding phase d
ifference phi(parallel-to) - phi(perpendicular-to) approximately (lamb
da/a) is calculated in this paper. An alternative method of calculatio
n of the higher (approximately lambda/a) WKB corrections for the one-d
imensional Schrodinger problem is developed as a by-product of the wor
k.
