Abstract
Male rats were castrated before puberty. When they were adult, the act ivity of their mesolimbic dopamine system was tested by ventral striat um microdialysis. Amphetamine injections increased dopamine more in ca strated rats than in normal rats. This exaggerated response was attenu ated by testosterone replacement therapy. The mechanism by which andro gens modulate the activity of the mesolimbic dopamine system is discus sed.
