Atomic Al develops a population inversion and stimulated emission in t
he resonance fines when a solid target in a H-2 buffer gas is irradiat
ed with ArF 1930-angstrom laser light. We present experimental evidenc
e that the H- ion is responsible for this effect, through charge-neutr
alizing collisions with Al+.
