D. Uttamchandani et al., DETERMINATION OF ERBIUM DISTRIBUTION IN OPTICAL FIBERS USING CONFOCALOPTICAL MICROSCOPY, IEEE photonics technology letters, 6(3), 1994, pp. 437-439
Confocal fluorescence microscopy has been used to detect the 565 nm wa
velength fluorescence generated from Er+3 ions present in erbium doped
optical fibers, thereby enabling the concentration profile of these i
ons in the fiber core to be determined. The fluorescence intensity dis
tribution also enables the total Er+3 ion concentration in the fibers
to be estimated, and the estimated values are shown to be in good agre
ement with data supplied by the fiber manufacturers.
