Abstract
A novel scheme for the utilization of optically preamplified (EDFA) PP M receivers in intersatellite laser communications is proposed. Instea d of employing a photon counting strategy, we have considered a thresh old detection system. Using our model with conservative parameters, we have demonstrated potential receiver sensitivities of 40 photons / bi t. This compares well with other results in the field and indicates th e great potential of this receiver formation for use in satellite comm unications. (C) 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
