Nonresonant excitation of 1 % Pr3+: YAG with UV (325 355 nm) irradiati
on produces intensity-dependent optical dephasing. Two-pulse photon ec
hoes on the H-3(4)-->1D2 transition of Pr3+ were measured at 1.5 K bef
ore, during and after UV irradiation. After exposure to UV intensities
greater than 30 MW/cm2 there remain persistent changes (for at least
several hours) in the echo intensity, echo decay rate and temporal for
m of the echo decay.
