The fauna and distribution of rodents and insect-eating mammals was st
udied in different habitals of Rostov-on-Don district near Chertkovo.
The islands of natural feather-grass steppe are revealed to be too sma
ll for preservation of the steppe faunal associations of small mammals
. Common vole, field mouse and common shrew (the species common for ag
ricultural lands in temperate zone) were the most abundant In all stud
ied biotopes except the silvan ones where dominate bank vole and yello
w-necked mouse.
