Abstract
A new variant of the Stroop effect was used to test the model describe d by Glaser and Glaser (1989). Experiment 1 shows that an incongruent color word interferes with the naming of the intrinsic color of an obj ect presented by an achromatic line-drawing (e.g., the word RED upon t he picture of a banana). In Experiment 2, the stimuli were to be sorte d according to the intrinsic color of the represented object. The indi cators for sorting were color patches or color words. Contrary to the predictions derived from Glaser and Glaser's (1989) model of the Stroo p effect, interference was observed with both types of indicators. Exp eriment 3 shows that this result was not a consequence of the specific set of colors which was used in Experiment 2. Considering the results , a revised version of model is presented in which the pattern of inte rference is explained by the activation strength of the target and dis tractor.
