C. Monin et al., PROPHYLACTIC TREATMENT OF RETINAL-DETACHM ENT IN WAGNER-STICKLER-DISEASE - A COMPARISON OF THE DIFFERENT METHODS BASED ON 22 CASES, Journal francais d'ophtalmologie, 17(3), 1994, pp. 167-174
Prophylactic treatment in patients presenting Wagner-Stickler disease
has not been yet weir defined. We retrospectively studied twenty-two p
atients who had a retinal detachment on the first eye. Among the ten p
atients treated by peripheral confluent laser photocoagulation, five h
ad a retinal detachment after a mean follow-up of fifteen months; with
a 42 % rate of spontaneous retinal detachment bilateralization, we ca
n conclude that laser therapy has not been efficient. Four patients tr
eated by focal or circular laser photocoagulation, cryotherapy or vitr
ectomy developed retinal detachment. Eight eves treated by a preventiv
e encircling scleral buckle did not develop retinal detachment, with a
mean follow-up of twenty-one months. This follow-up is still too shor
t, but greater than the mean bilateralization delay. Per and postopera
tive complications had no consequences.
