Abstract
At the International level, the share of surface mount technology in t he electronic assembly is increasing and has already reached a level o f 50 per cent. However, in India the penetration of SMT is quite insig nificant. The growth of SMT in India is essential for developing an in ternationally competitive electronic industry. This report is based on a survey undertaken to study the SMT facilities already existing in t he country. It is noticed that while some of the major users- in compu ters and communication have installed good facilities, the overall uti lization is extremely low. Some units are now coming up to take up con tract assembly jobs. The general awareness level is increasing very ra pidly and with the increase in production of new generation equipment, the demand for SMT is expected to reach a significant level.
