The electrochemically activated direct introduction of CO2 into poly(v
inyl chloride), poly(vinyl bromide) and polybutadiene to form the corr
esponding acrylic acid copolymers is shown. It is demonstrated that th
e maximum extent of carboxylation is attained in the case of poly(viny
l chloride), when conducting controlled-potential electrolysis in dime
thylformamide using a platinum cathode and sacrificial anode in an und
ivided cell. Possible pathways for the explored reactions are suggeste
d.
