A great variety of microstructures may be observed in an alloy when th
e solidification conditions and the composition are changed. A criteri
on for the selection of a given microstructure is presented which is b
ased on comparison of the relevant interface response functions and on
the assumption of maximum interface temperature. Microstructure selec
tion maps for two Al base systems (Al-Fe and Al-Cu) are presented and
analysed in the light of the present theory.
