Ch. Thurber et al., CATALOG OF LOCATIONS OF NUCLEAR-EXPLOSIONS AT BALAPAN, KAZAKHSTAN, 1965 TO 1985, Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 84(2), 1994, pp. 458-461
Geographic locations for 81 explosions at the Balapan test site in Kaz
akhstan are derived with a precision of about 200 m from time-sequence
LANDSAT MSS and SPOT satellite images combined with teleseismic epice
nter estimates. The LANDSAT images were registered to ground control p
oints from a SPOT image to provide high relative accuracy for feature
comparison. Initial seismic location estimates for the explosions were
derived using joint epicenter determination. For most events, there i
s little or no ambiguity in the association between seismic events and
image features, owing to the frequency of the LANDSAT images and the
spatial separation between explosions.
