We emphasize the importance of finding the ''true'' observables of the
Einstein theory for canonical quantum gravity. The Hamilton-Jacobi th
eory for constrained systems is outlined and its application in terms
of Ashtekar variables and Dirac variables is discussed. A specific exa
mple of a Bianchi 11 model is solved and the role of one variable as a
''time'' parameter is indicated. We end with a brief remark about an
alternative approach
