After outlining of the evolution of comparative psychology of time, th
is paper presents hypotheses, experimental strategies and recent data
relevant to between-species comparisons. The animal-human generalizabi
lity issue is briefly discussed, as well as the role of language and t
he relevance of developmental studies to animal-human comparisons in p
articular. The paper argues for the development of an integrative theo
ry of timing, taking both comparative and developmental aspects of beh
avior into account.
