Abstract
For sheets bonded beyond the point of maximum tearing strength, tearin g energy is proportional to the square of fiber strength. This suggest s that the energy of tear derives primarily from the release of energy when fibers fail, rather than when bonds break or fibers pull out. Th is contradicts the conventional theory of tear and a new explanation o f tearing strength is proposed.
