An earlier investigation revealed that commingling self-twist yarn wit
h ii thin multifilament improved yam appearance and strength. This pap
er describes a continued effort in that direction. Self-twist yarns ar
e spun and air interlaced in a continuous operation on the Repco self-
twist yam spinning machine without the introduction of filaments. The
abrasion resistance of the self-twist yam is remarkably enhanced after
air interlacing, especially in the zero-twist parts. When compared wi
th counterparts made from self-twist and STT yarns, the knitted fabric
s from the air interlaced self-twist yam show improvements in handle a
nd most mechanical properties, along with reduced knit loop distortion
, which is inherent in ordinary self-twist yam due to its structural v
ariation.
