Laser ablated Zn and Cd atoms contain sufficient excess energy to reac
t directly with O-2 to produce the subject molecules. A zinc isotopic
triplet at 769.2, 766.8, 764.5 cm(-1) gave a doublet with statistical
isotopic oxygen confirming the identification of ZnO. A previous reson
ance Raman fundamental at 769 cm(-1) is reassigned to ZnO, which sugge
sts a green visible absorption for the zinc oxide molecule. A zinc iso
topic triplet at 748.2, 744.4, 740.9 cm(-1) produced a triplet with st
atistical isotopic oxygen and isotopic shifts appropriate for the line
ar OZnO dioxide molecule. Cadmium is less reactive than zinc; infrared
absorptions at 645.1 and 626.6, 625.4 cm(-1) exhibit proper oxygen is
otopic behavior for assignment to CdO and OCdO and the latter showed p
artially resolved cadmium isotopic splittings. (C) 1997 American Insti
