Abstract
The vapor-phase condensation of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde into acr olein was investigated. Zeolite catalysts; e.g. Y-faujasite, mordenite , ZSM-5, and volcanic tuff have been tested in this aldol reaction. Th e best results were obtained when modified volcanic tuff was used. The catalytic activity seems to depend on the balance between acidic and basic properties. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc,
