T. Bennett et D. Poulikakos, HEAT-TRANSFER ASPECTS OF SPLAT-QUENCH SOLIDIFICATION - MODELING AND EXPERIMENT, Journal of Materials Science, 29(8), 1994, pp. 2025-2039
In this paper a combined theoretical and experimental study is reporte
d on the process of solidification of a liquid metal droplet by impact
ion on a cold substrate (splat-quenching). The study is focused on the
heat transfer aspects of this process and on the identification of pa
rameters affecting the heat transfer mechanism. To this end, the effec
t of the droplet impact velocity and temperature, the effect of the su
bstrate material and its initial temperature, and the effect of the th
ermal contact resistance between the splat and the substrate are inves
tigated. A two-dimensional conduction model accounting for the freezin
g process in the splat and for the solidification kinetics has predict
ed reasonably well the trends observed in the experimental part of the
study.
