Composites of elastomeric polymers and poly(gamma-methyl L-glutamate)
(PMLG) were prepared by the so-called ''in-situ polycondensation metho
d'' and a solution blend method. Three types of rubbers were used as m
atrix polymers:styrene-butadiene copolymer and two derivatives. Mechan
ical properties of these composite polymers were studied by tensile te
sts and their morphologies were observed by scanning electron microsco
py. The tensile strength and modulus of the composite films obtained b
y the in-situ polycondensation method increased with increasing PMLG c
ontent. Although their tensile modulus values increased drastically, t
heir ultimate elongation values were almost the same. The morphologies
of the composites and the reinforcing effect of PMLG were dependent o
n the preparation method, on the contents of PMLG, and on an interacti
on between matrix polymer and PMLG.
