SYMMETRY-BREAKING IN VERTICAL-CAVITY SEMICONDUCTOR-LASERS

For symmetry reasons vertical-cavity semiconductors lasers might be ex pected to show polarization isotropy. In practice, the symmetry is bro ken by unintentional anisotropies. We discuss the origins of these ani sotropies, how they can be manipulated and what their consequences are for the polarization behavior.
