Abstract
In Senegal, wild ground-feeding birds are frequently infested with imm ature ticks. In two areas where numerous Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fe ver (CCHF) virus isolations were obtained from Hyalomma marginatum ruf ipes adult ticks collected on ungulates, 175 birds were captured and s era collected. CCHF antibodies were detected by ELISA in 6/22 red-beak ed hornbills (Tockus erythrorhynchus), 2/11 glossy starlings (Lamproto rnis sp.) and 1/3 guinea fowls. The virus was isolated from H. m. rufi pes nymphs collected on a hornbill. The role of wild ground-feeding bi rds in CCHF virus ecology in West Africa is discussed.
