Abstract
Applied psychology is a source of expert power and stable jobs. There are several structural changes in this occupation as it develops towar ds the objective of obtaining public recognition of its status as a ne w profession. The leading question is who is using the training in app lied psychology. Specialty-tracks are historically specific constructs in the realm of this scientific discipline. Career-tracks are histori cally specific forms in the professionalisation process. Applied psych ology cannot progress quickly enough if only one perspective holds a p re-eminent role. The prestige and influence of this profession is link ed to the record of successful career paths among applied psychologist s, and not just to the record of advanced research and behavioural mod els.
