The synthesis of polymers from polyfluorinated styrenes in a low-frequ
ency glow discharge was studied. The growth rates of polymer films on
metal supports were determined. The structure of the produced polymers
was studied by IR-spectroscopy and elemental microanalysis techniques
. The role of various mechanisms of polymer formation: the polymerizat
ion by double bond cleavage, the condensation of fluoroaromatic rings
by the abstraction of a substituent, the opening of rings to form alip
hatic units in a polymer chain, etc. was discussed in relation to the
type of substituent at the fluoroaromatic ring.
