What metaphors do unions use te talk about the company? Built around s
everal oppositions, these metaphors show that perceptions of the shop
territory are polarized. Interrelations between these symbolic express
ions are described; and three paradigms of the firm, proposed for expl
aining them. These paradigms refer to different levels of collective a
ction and mobilization. Attention is then drawn to the grounds used, o
n the one hand, to justify union actions and, on the other, to dispute
the images and figures of speech used by the adversary, the boss.
