The elastic breakup of 56 MeV deuterons has been studied in a kinemati
cally complete measurement at theta(p) = theta(n) = 0-degrees. The tri
ple differential cross section exhibits a conspicuous double-peaked st
ructure. Its magnitude reaches a maximum at around Ca-40 as a function
of target. These characteristic features are analyzed on the basis of
the distorted-wave Born-approximation theory and turn out to be stron
g evidence for the Coulomb breakup of the deuteron.
