The condensation of aniline, toluidines or diphenylamine with norborne
ne tetrahydrofuran is promoted by a system generated from Li(n)Bu, ArN
H2 and [{(PEt3)2RhCl}2]. Aniline and m- and p-toluidines lead to a mix
ture of hydroamination and hydroarylation products whereas o-toluidine
and diphenylamine lead to the hydroarylation product only. When condu
cted in the amine as solvent, the reaction is catalytic with respect t
o both lithium and rhodium.
