Abstract
The reactions of aluminium(III) iodide with a number of common potenti
ally chelating ethers and esters have been studied in diethylether or
carbon disulphide solutions. Cleavage of the O-C bond occurred under v
ery mild conditions. Differences in reactivity of aluminium iodide tow
ards some closely related compounds suggest chelation is important in
the mechanism of cleavage.
