Radar images have a peculiar texture, which is essentially fine-graine
d. They necessitate therefore an appropriate specific processing techn
ique, in order to enhance their thematic interpretation. The objective
of this paper is to present an original methodology applied to the di
fferentiation of urban areas from VARAN radar images of the town of Lu
c (in the Var, South-east of France). Mathematical morphology methods
enable the preprocessing of radar images necessary for subsequent text
ural analysis. Variogram analysis is later used to resolve the confusi
on between the fine-grain of speckle and the urban grain.
