Abstract
Lyapounov exponents have been determined for patterns of oscillatory z oning as revealed by cathodoluminescence in zircon and apatite; values for the exponent range from +0.0011 to +0.0149. These positive values indicate that the zoning patterns are weakly chaotic, and that the de velopment of the zoning was sensitive to the initial conditions of cry stal growth. The Lyapounov exponent can be used as a quantitative meas ure of the zoning character and in comparisons of various patterns of zoning.
